Snowy Steamboat Springs

We usually try to escape at least once a ski season to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It might just be my favorite Colorado mountain, but it is a bit more of a trek than some of the others. That said it is big enough to actually be a town, and while popular for tourists it also has a healthy population of residents. In fact more and more of our friends are looking to eventually move there.

Due to having our gear in Winter Park, we often drive that way and split the drive up too which is nice. We intended to cross country near our condo and then continue on to meet our friends for a later arrival, but with snow rolling in and our friend already being up there we headed out earlier. We had thought about checking out one of the best cross country ski areas near Kremmling, but kept on towards Steamboat.

Once in Steamboat, we stopped downtown for lunch at the best burger place in town, The Backdoor Grill. It not only has traditional burger selections, but also has donuts, peanut butter and queso as just some of the unique ingredients. My favorite part is that you get all that wackiness and a turkey burger option for me! I had one that was pepper jack, queso and green chilis with a turkey patty and onion rings.

After lunch, we went up to our friend’s place and got changed to cross country skiing. She recommended going over to a mom and pop place called Lake Catamount. Unfortunately, when we got there the owner told us with the snow starting late that it was like sludge and we continued on to Rabbit Ears Pass, where we skied for free in a challenging but beautiful area. I even took some funny photos for my photography site that were truly meant as a joke.

We returned to hang out with our friends and just chitchatted and hung out until we ventured out for dinner. We made our way down to Talay Thai for some delicious food and more good conversation before heading back to the condo and calling it a night.

Saturday was a day for incredible powder skiing with jokes about face shots of powder which may have been due to falling and rolling in the snow. We showed them some of favorite spots on the mountain which surprisingly they hadn’t been on. We ended the day meeting some of their friends for a beverage at T Bar and then took the shuttle back to the condo. We hung out for a bit and then made our way back to the condo via a very easy shuttle.

We chose a new place for all of us for dinner called Besame which was fantastic. We enjoyed one of their signature cocktails on happy hour and then shared various small plates of empanadas, shishitos, seared scallops, short rib and more. Yum! We returned to the condo for some Exploding Kittens and called it a night.

I let the more advanced skiers ski the next day, and I enjoyed mountain time and blogging. We then checked out our friend’s favorite restaurant in town, Taco Cabo, which was amazing and then headed out of town in what turned out to be a crazy snow storm. The snow, food and company on this trip definitely did not disappoint.
